THE DUFFEL BAG BOY
By Jameson Stokes
Synopsis: A statistic and product of his environment, Tyrone Williams’ destiny seems to follow the typical formula of street life in New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised by his Grandmother ‘Madea’, Tyrone learns early on how to handle the everyday toils so common in the inner-city streets of one of the nation’s most violent inner cities. Struggling to make ends meet with less than a middle school education and with a part time dishwashing job, the young man quickly learns the ins and outs of running the neighborhood’s drug ring. Under the guidance of Raphael, his affluent drug supplier, Tyrone oversees his neighborhood’s crack distribution and heads a crew of up-and-coming ‘trapsters’.
Tyrone has almost completely accepted and succumbed to his ill-fated existence in the projects, but several factors finally spark a flint of hope that he can change his life - his pregnant girlfriend Maria’s undying love for him and their unborn baby as well as advice from a mentor to quit dealing drugs and pursue his art career. But it’s the arrival of what experts predicted for years, a catastrophic hurricane heading directly for New Orleans, that really gives Tyrone hope that there is a possibility to literally escape the poverty, drugs, and death in which he was so intertwined. Could this storm of disastrous proportions actually bring him a new life?
Logline: Pursued by corrupt cops, underworld figures and an impending hurricane, a young man tries to escape the drug game and his beloved city of New Orleans.
